The Best Christmas Entertainment for Small Teams

Every November my phone rings with a version of the same question. “There are only fourteen of us this year. Is it actually worth booking entertainment, or should we just go out for a meal?” I understand the worry. Most Christmas entertainment is built for big rooms: bands, DJs, casino tables, a stage at one end and two hundred people at the other. If your team is eight, fifteen or thirty people, none of that fits, and it is easy to conclude that entertainment simply is not made for groups your size. Having performed at both ends of the scale, I can tell you the opposite is true. For close-up magic and mind reading, a small team is not a compromise. It is the ideal audience.

Why small teams are the best audience I work for

I am a Full Member of The Magic Circle, Cotswolds Magician of the Year 2026, and PMCA accredited with the Professional Emcee Association. Before I performed full time I was an international marketing director, so I still think about events the way an organiser does: what is the money buying, and will people talk about it afterwards?

At a party of two hundred, even a brilliant act reaches a fraction of the room. Half the guests are too far from the stage, someone is at the bar, someone else is checking on the taxi. At a party of fourteen, none of that happens. Everyone is in the room, everyone is close enough to see, and everyone gets a moment that belongs to them.

Here is what a small group gets that a big one never quite can:

  • Everyone is involved. Nobody watches from the back, because there is no back. The magic happens at arm’s length, often in a guest’s own hands.
  • Every guest gets a personal moment. With 8 to 30 people I can spend real time with each person, not just a lucky table near the front.
  • One shared story. When the whole team witnesses the same impossible thing together, it becomes the story they retell in January. That shared memory is the actual point of a team Christmas party.
  • Reactions feed each other. In a tight group, one person’s astonishment sets off the next. Small rooms are louder than big ones, in the best way.

Mind reading in particular thrives at this scale. Divining something a colleague is merely thinking is powerful anywhere, but when it happens to someone the whole team knows personally, two feet away, it hits differently.

What actually works for 8 to 30 people

The best small Christmas party entertainment fits around your evening rather than demanding the evening fit around it. These are the formats I use most, depending on the setting.

Around the dinner table

If your party is a meal in a restaurant or private dining room, I perform between courses. Guests stay seated, the food service is never interrupted, and the magic arrives in natural gaps that would otherwise be filled with phone-checking. With one or two tables I can work with everyone individually across the evening, so by dessert every guest has had something happen right in front of them.

In the office or a private room

Plenty of small teams celebrate in the office or a hired room rather than a restaurant, and it works beautifully. I mingle through the group during drinks, performing close-up magic and mind reading in small clusters, then, if you want a focal point, I can bring everyone together for a short informal set with no stage required. It turns a room with a few bottles and some crisps into an event.

Mingling during drinks

If your evening is drinks-led, mingling performance is the format. I move between groups, breaking the ice and giving people something to talk about beyond work. This is especially useful for teams that do not socialise together often, or where partners have been invited and conversations need a spark. It is the same skill set I use drawing crowds and generating leads at trade shows, applied to making your party flow.

Whichever format suits you, a few things stay constant. I need no stage, no sound system, no lighting and no setup time that affects your guests. If your venue has a table and a corner, I have everything I need.

Making it feel special on a sensible budget

Small teams often have small budgets, and I would rather be straight about what that buys than dress it up. My Christmas packages start from £550, and because close-up magic needs no production, that figure is genuinely the figure. There is no staging, PA hire or crew cost hiding behind it.

A few honest suggestions for getting the most from a modest budget:

  • Spend on the moment, not the trimmings. Guests forget centrepieces. They do not forget the moment their thought-of word appeared somewhere impossible. One strong element people will talk about beats five forgettable ones.
  • Use the venue you already have. A private room at a good local restaurant, or even your own office done properly, costs far less than a function suite, and close-up performance suits those spaces better anyway.
  • Time the entertainment where energy dips. During arrival drinks and between courses are the natural slots. You are not paying for hours of filler, you are paying for the right forty-five to ninety minutes.
  • Keep it adult. I perform for adult audiences only, at corporate events, weddings and private parties, and I do not do children’s parties. Material written for grown-ups is part of what makes a team night feel like a proper night out rather than a works do.

If you want a sense of how that lands with real bookers, my Google rating is 5.0 from 9 reviews. Small sample, honestly stated, but every one of them is from someone who took the same decision you are weighing up now.

The questions small-team organisers always ask me

A quick run through the practicalities, because these come up on nearly every enquiry call:

  • “Our room is tiny. Is that a problem?” No. Small rooms are my natural habitat. If guests can stand or sit, I can perform.
  • “We’re only booking a few weeks out. Is that too late?” December dates do go, and the popular Thursdays and Fridays go first, so the sooner you check your date the better. But it is always worth asking.
  • “We’re not in Cheltenham. Do you travel?” I am based near Cheltenham in Gloucestershire and perform regularly across Bristol, Birmingham, Oxford, Swindon, London, Worcester and Cardiff, and nationwide beyond that.
  • “Will quieter colleagues hate it?” This is the most common worry and the easiest to settle. Nobody is dragged up on stage, because there is no stage. Guests who want to be hands-on get involved; guests who prefer to watch simply watch from two feet away. Nobody is ever made the punchline.

If you are planning a Christmas party for a small team this year, do not let the size of your guest list talk you out of making it memorable. Have a look at my Christmas party packages and prices for what is included and how the packages from £550 work, and if your December do is a work event, my corporate event entertainment page covers that side in more detail. Then check your date with me before it goes: call 0333 3355 087 or get in touch through the site, and I will tell you honestly whether I am free and what would work best for your group.

Questions

Frequently asked

Is it really worth booking a magician for only 10 or 15 guests?

Yes, and in many ways it works better than at a large event. Close-up magic and mind reading are designed for small groups, so with 10 to 15 guests every single person gets a personal moment rather than watching a stage from a distance. I perform at parties of this size every December.

How much does small Christmas party entertainment cost?

My Christmas packages start from £550. That covers a professional close-up magic and mind reading performance with no staging, sound system or production costs on top, which is one reason it suits smaller budgets well.

Do you need a stage or special setup at our venue?

No. I work in the space you already have, whether that is a restaurant table, a private dining room or your office. There is nothing to build, plug in or rig, and I liaise with the venue directly if needed.

Do you perform at children's parties?

No. I perform for adult audiences only, at corporate events, trade shows, weddings and private parties. My material is written for grown-ups, which is exactly why it lands so well at team Christmas parties.
