How Much Does a Christmas Party Magician Cost?

Every autumn, the first question in almost every Christmas enquiry I receive is the same one: what does this actually cost? It is a fair question, and I would rather answer it plainly than make you fill in a form to find out. My Christmas party packages start from £550, and in this guide I will explain exactly what moves the price up or down from there, what a professional fee should include, and how to get a fixed quote with nothing hidden in the small print.

I spent years as an international marketing director before becoming a full-time magician and mind reader, which means I have sat on your side of the table, signing off budgets and wondering whether a supplier’s quote was fair. This is the cost breakdown I wish someone had given me back then.

The honest answer on Christmas party magician cost

There is no single national price for a magician, because no two bookings are the same. What I can tell you is how mine work. Packages start from £550, and the final figure for your event depends on a small number of practical factors: your date, your location, how long you want me performing, how many guests you have, and the style of entertainment you are after.

What I do not do is quote low and then add extras. When I confirm a price, it is fixed and all-in. Travel is included. Insurance is included. There is no fuel surcharge appearing on an invoice in January. If you have ever booked entertainment before and been stung by creeping costs, that alone is worth knowing before we go any further.

What actually drives the price

The date, and the December premium

December is the single biggest factor. Every company in the country is trying to celebrate in the same three or four weeks, and the peak evenings (typically the Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays in mid-December) go first and command the strongest fees. A performer can only be in one place on any given night, so those dates are priced accordingly.

If your budget is tight, the fix is simple: be flexible on the date. An early-December evening, a midweek night or a daytime celebration will usually cost less than the busiest Friday of the month, with exactly the same performance.

Location and travel

I am based near Cheltenham in Gloucestershire and perform regularly across Bristol, Birmingham, Oxford, Swindon, London, Worcester and Cardiff, as well as nationwide. Distance affects the quote, but here is the important part: it is built into the fixed price up front. You will never see travel appear as a separate line after the event.

Timings and hours

A one-hour drinks reception is a different job from an evening that runs from arrival drinks through to after dinner. The longer I am performing, the more of your guests I can reach and the more the fee reflects that. When you enquire, have a rough running order in mind (even just “drinks at seven, dinner at eight”) and I can recommend the slot where magic works hardest.

Group size

Close-up magic happens in small groups, a few people at a time, as I mingle among your guests. Thirty guests and two hundred guests are very different evenings, because reaching everyone properly takes time. Guest numbers therefore shape how many hours you need, which shapes the price.

The type of entertainment

Most Christmas bookings want mingling close-up magic and mind reading: I move between groups during drinks or between courses, and the room gets louder as I go. Some events want something more structured, and corporate clients sometimes combine a Christmas celebration with the trade-show style crowd-drawing work I do the rest of the year. The format affects preparation and delivery, so it affects the fee. One thing worth stating clearly: I perform for adults only. Corporate parties, trade shows, weddings and private parties, yes. Children’s parties, no.

Why the cheapest quote can be a false economy

If you are organising a work Christmas party, your name is attached to every decision, including the entertainment. That changes the calculation.

A hobbyist quoting a low fee might be perfectly pleasant. But a work event is not the place to run a test. The material has to be right for a mixed adult audience that includes your directors and your newest hire. The performer has to read a room, know when to approach a group and when to leave one alone, and hold their own with confident, sceptical people who have had a drink. And above all, they have to turn up, on the one night of the year you cannot reschedule.

A professional fee is largely paying for certainty. Mine includes:

• Public liability insurance, which many venues now require before a performer is allowed through the door.
• A Magic Circle standard of performance. I am a Full Member of The Magic Circle and Cotswolds Magician of the Year 2026, and I am PMCA accredited through the Professional Emcee Association.
• Reliability. Confirmed in writing, planned in advance, and on time on the night.
• Judgement. Years of professional rooms, which is the difference between magic that interrupts a party and magic that becomes the party.

The gap between a cheap booking and a professional one is rarely visible on the invoice. It is very visible at 8pm on the night.

How to get a fixed, all-in quote

Getting a price from me takes one short conversation. Tell me four things:

• The date (or the two or three dates you are considering)
• The venue location
• Rough timings for the evening
• Approximate guest numbers

From that, I will give you a single fixed figure. No deposit surprises, no travel added later, no hidden extras of any kind. If a different format or timing would give you a better evening for the same money, I will say so, because I would rather you book the right thing than the biggest thing.
